Curriculum Structure

The Nursery follows the approved Early Years Foundation Stage principals and Reception class continue working towards the Foundation Stage Profile.  Nursery pupils are assessed according to these principals and a Learning Journey is constantly updated by their key workers. The Early Years Foundation Stage Profile charts pupils progress in their Reception year.

ICT is taught throughout the school, as are Modern Foreign Languages. There is a strong academic structure along with many opportunities in art, music and sport. Swimming, Games, Dance and Gym take place every week and there is a sound framework for religious studies.

In addition to the Form libraries, there is a School Library. Lessons are timetabled for each class and it is open at lunch time for pupils. All children are encouraged to use this facility for information and pleasure. Children in Form three are taken on alternate weeks to the local Library in Portswood. They learn how to use the Library and they are allowed to take out books.

The school arranges regular outings to museums, theatres and places of educational interest throughout the year.

Pupils are encouraged to enter the School’s annual competitions in, essay and poetry writing, music and art. There are also house competitions in games and athletics.

The Uppers School holds its own internal examinations during the Autumn and Summer terms. Pupils are prepared for entrance examinations which are taken at the age of eleven for our secondary school, The Gregg School and for other secondary schools of their choice. Children also sit the statutory tests at the end of Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.  Pupils in years 3, 4 and 5 sit the optional statutory tests of their age group assessment.
